Thursday, December 29 Salzburg
The tour bus picked us up at 8:30 this morning for the sound of music tour. We started in the Mirabell gardens which of course had no flowers this time of year. We saw the Gazebo at Hellbron Palace and the lake that the children and Maria fell into at the Palace of Leopoldskom. Our tour guide gave us all the inside information about the real Von Trapps who escaped from Salzburg in 1938. We saw their real house, as well as the two houses used in the movie to represent their house.
We drove 30min up to the Lakes and Mountains district, where Maria danced and sang “The hills are alive”. We saw the chapel at Mondsee where Maria and the Captain were married. The whole time in the bus, everyone was singing along to the Sound of Music soundtrack. It has been 30 years since I’ve watched the movie, yet I surprised myself that I knew all the songs. Our tour guide also explained to us why few people in Salzburg have even heard of the “Sound of Music”.
We had lunch in Mondsee, where we tried some Kaiserscharmm and some Irish coffee. The Kaiserscharmm was like pancakes with plum sauce… delicious! We arrived back in Salzburg at 2pm, and found a camera shop to see if our camera could be repaired. The guy sent us to a camera repair shop that was just near our hotel. Unfortunately, when we found it, it was closed because the shop owner was on holidays.
The kids went back to the hotel, while Gwen and I explored old town Salzburg. We saw the residence plaza, the capital plaza, the glockenspiel, the fortress, the abbey as well as many other old churches and other buildings. We bought some pretzels before going back to the hotel for a buffet dinner.
