Heidelberg, Germany
January, 2012
Tuesday, January 3 Heidelberg
Today, we borrowed Helmut’s other smart car. This one was a little bigger and we drove sitting up, unlike the last one where we drove lying down. We followed Carmen all the way to Heidelberg. Instead of taking the autobahn, we took the scenic route along the river, where we passed many castles along the way.
Once at Heidelberg, we purchased some nutella crepes before taking the train up the mountain to the famous castle. The castle was bombed during WWII but most of it remains standing. The views from the castle were spectacular, overlooking the town of Heidelberg with its river and 200 year old bridge. The castle itself contained big wine barrels, where all the local farmers would bring their wine tithe every month. We walked through the pharmacy museum, and parts of the Heidelberg university. It is the oldest university in Germany, dating back to 1346. It was here that Robert Bunsen invented the Bunsen buner in the 19th century.
After exploring the castle, we had lunch in a thai restaurant in Heidelberg. We walked around taking photos, but it was very cold, as the wind was blowing. We headed back to Lowenstein at 4:30pm. When we arrived home, we found the carollers there waiting to sing to us and to bless the house for the new year.
We had pizza for dinner and Nina and Haiko joined us. Haiko told us that he had been to Australia twice, once as an exchange student when he was 16. Nina’s younger sister, Kimmie, also came to spend time with Jamaica. They could not understand each other, but they had so much fun together. Kimmie was in tears when she had to leave because she knew that Jamaica was leaving tomorrow.
After dinner, we watched the sound of music. It was much better because now we had seen all the places shown in the movie. At midnight, we packed our bags for tomorrow because we are leaving Germany.
